Green IT, long-term survivial for your Data Centers

The use of renewable sources reduces costs in Data Centers

Did you know that Microsoft constructed an undersea Data Center sea in 2017?  It was named “Project Natick” and located about 9 meters below the surface of the water off the coast of Central California. To do so, they locked the servers in a 2.5-meter-wide steel drum. The tubes that pass through this drum allow the heat transfer from the processor to the cold water of the ocean, and liquid nitrogen was used to cool computers’ chips.

Microsoft Undersea Data Center

The company tested its submarine Data Center obtaining better results than expected. According to Microsoft, placing the massive server farms underwater drastically reduced cooling expenses normally used in a traditional data center, which translated into better performance.

Google, for its part, also took action on the issue of energy reduction, relocating many of its Data Centers close to hydroelectric power plants to maximize the use of renewable energy sources while reducing their expenses.

It is not that all companies have to place their Data Centers under the ocean, because organizations do not always have a technological infrastructure as huge and powerful as Microsoft or Google. However, keep in mind that computer infrastructures consume significant amounts of electricity, which generates higher consumption on our electricity grids and consequently higher greenhouse gas emissions.

The demand for data storage capacity is increasing more and more, which in turn boosts energy consumption and subsequent cooling demands.

That is why numerous corporations around the world have focused their attention on Green Computing or Green IT. It is a practice that goes beyond the noble purpose of defense of the Environment. Companies understood that avoiding damage to the environment also represents better performance and the long-term survival of their IT infrastructures.

The so-called green technologies revolutionize the technological industry and also take care of the Environment.

“Green Technologies” = more efficient and sustainable data center

It is hard to tell, but it is more than just a few organizations that pay attention to Green IT approaches, a vision that seeks to reduce or eliminate as much as possible the environmental impact of Information Technology.
If your organization has implemented virtualization, do not worry, you are on a good path to achieve a Green IT approach. Let us recall that, precisely, the trend towards virtualization in the United States began with the power generation crisis of 2006.

Virtualization is included among the technologies that contribute most to the reduction of energy consumption and, therefore, generate less damage to the environment. In The Cloud, data centers consume only the necessary energy, thus eliminating waste.

If you have not thought about it, it is time that your company leap-frogs into the use of green technologies, a good way to ally with our Environment and at the same time to improve the efficiency of your computing resources.
