What is a fire detection system?
Among the main components of a fire detection system it is the fire station, automatic detectors, the sensor cable, manual pushbuttons andalarm signaling systems. We explained it on an easy way!
Fire Station: The control unit receives the signal from the sensing devices (sensors, switches …) and takes appropriate actions (giving an alarm, an extinction jump …) depending on the established program function.
Automatic detectors: These are the devices that automatically detect if a fire is occurring. There are a lot of them but the most common are:
1. Thermal Detectors: Detect when the temperature exceeds a value established.
2. Smoke detectors: Detect smoke by absorption or light scattering.
3. Thermovelocimetric detectors: Detect a rapid increase in temperature.
4. Others: There are other types of detectors such as flame and spark detectors.
Sensor cable: It is an automatic detection device consisting of a heat-resistant polymer covered cable that upon reaching a certain temperature, the heat-resistant polymer melts down, then the wires make contact and this produce an alarm. It is especially design for tunnels, warehouses, machinery, electrical panels.
Manual pushbuttons: They are manual detection devices that are design to be struck by a person if he/she is aware of a fire.
Alarm signaling systems: These are devices that are installed in a specific place to inform all the people who are in danger that an alarm is occurring. They can be:
1. Audio signals (sirens and bells): Produces a sound that can be heard loud and clear by the people involved.
2. Optical signaling: When acoustic signaling cannot be done due to a very noisy ambient, an optical signal is placed across devices that generate a flashing light.
