Synology updates its DiskStation Manager operating system
The renowned Taiwanese company Synology has taken a next level step for organizations to better meet the new challenges of security, reliability and data management.
They have recently released the new version of their operating system that powers their entire series of home and professional NAS: DSM 7.0 beta version of DiskStation Manager.
Undoubtedly, the efficient management of a NAS depends heavily on its operating system, responsible for managing the applications and the overall operation of the equipment, which qualifies it as a device with functions beyond copying files.
DSM 7.0 improves all aspects of Synology’s operating system, from storage management and user interface, to Cloud-supported functionality such as large-scale device monitoring and on-demand storage. Let’s take a closer look at what those enhancements are:
What’s new and improved in the new version?
This update is also accompanied by a set of Cloud-centric services to boost the functionality of the equipment.
The new version comes with a much faster and visually improved interface, which will provide a smoother experience when navigating between applications. This undoubtedly represents new improvements in the user experience, facilitating the tasks of management, navigation and use of the devices, and expanding its functionality to meet new needs and demands in data management.
The redesigned storage management functionality included in this new version will result in improved performance, more reliability and increased maintenance options to make it easier for IT and equipment administrators.
A new permissions system that will deliver better control over what applications and users can do. In addition, a more secure authentication process has been developed to prevent unwanted access, while improving convenience.
Availability of Synology Photos:
This is a completely new photo management solution that combines the artificial intelligence image detection and management features of Synology Moments with the organizational flexibility of Synology Photo Station. This new application within DSM 7.0 will serve as a replacement for Moments and Photo Station, perfectly imitating what Google offers with its Photos app, but locally and with the confidence that we have full control over our privacy.
New solutions such as Hybrid Share:
This inclusion allows you to integrate and combine cloud and on-premises storage for greater data security; or Active Insight, which offers the possibility to monitor aggregated performance and usage from a single portal. The new operating system will also feature backup solutions that combine comprehensive and robust data protection with the convenience of the cloud. In turn, frequently accessed data will be stored locally as if it were a cache, for quick and hassle-free access.
DSM 7.0 will be available as a free upgrade for all supported Synology devices. All network-attached storage (NAS) systems that support this new version will be receiving the upgrade starting June 29, 2021.
How to upgrade Synology to DSM 7.0?
The upgrade will be straightforward. The computer will notify us and we can upgrade by pressing a button on the DSM control panel. This upgrade may take up to an hour, depending on the performance of our device and the applications installed.
